Technology Square (Tech Square) is one of Georgia Tech’s flagship innovation districts — the hub where research, entrepreneurship, and industry converge to shape the future.

Located in the heart of Midtown Atlanta, Tech Square spans more than three million square feet of space, blending Georgia Tech’s world-leading academic offerings and research operations on the same block as global corporations, agile startups, and visionary entrepreneurs.

The History of Tech Square

1996

The Centennial Olympic Games takes place in Atlanta, temporarily designating the Fifth Street Bridge as the main entry point for Georgia Tech’s campus.

1997

Georgia Tech purchases land on the other side of the I-75/I-85 interstate for the first time.

2000

Georgia Tech announces a historic nearly $200 million investment to transform dilapidated surface parking lots into a hub of technology and business, connecting the Tech campus to Midtown Atlanta.

2003

Technology Square opens its doors for the first time to campus and private tenants.

2006

Atlanta DOT finishes construction on the Fifth Street Bridge, creating a “complete streets” overhaul with pedestrian paths, bike lanes, and a mini urban park.

2007

The Georgia Tech Foundation purchased the Crum & Forster Building, located in Tech Square with plans to expand Technology Square. The building was designed in the 1920s by the architectural firm of Ivey and Crook, whose founders Ernest Ivey and Lewis Crook helped establish the Architecture program at Georgia Tech in 1908.

2008

Georgia Tech acquired the Academy of Medicine with plans to reinvigorate the space by turning it into an event and function facility for the Institute.

2009

The Atlanta City Council and Mayor Shirley Franklin granted Crum & Forster Building protective status as a historic landmark.

2013

Renovations began on the Crum & Forster Building, preserving its Renaissance façade. Land clearance begins for expansion of the CODA Building.

2014

Tech Square is named "Outstanding Research Park" by the Association of University Research Parks.

2016

Tech acquired the landmark Atlanta Biltmore Hotel building to help accommodate additional innovation centers and startups.

2017

Tech Square Phase 3 is announced with a two-tower complex adding over 400,000 gross square feet to Tech Square

2018

NCR relocates their global headquarters to a new complex in Tech Square.

2019

CODA opens in Tech Square with a public-private partnership, adding 650,000 square feet of space to the innovation district, including a street-level food hall.

2020

Anthem Health opens its innovation & technology center in Tech Square, next door to CODA.

2023

Inaugural Avant South event is held in Tech Square, uniting technology & business leaders from Atlanta and beyond.

2025

Georgia Tech announces plan to revitalize the Biltmore to become a home hub to startups and incubators.

2026

Tech Square Phase 3 expected to complete, becoming the home to the Scheller College of Business and Industrial Systems Engineering.
